The Best Team Within 200 Miles‎‎

It gives me great pleasure to write about the Orchin practice. My son has been a patient for several years and has come out of the process of evaluation, monitoring, adjusting, and even more adjusting, with a beautiful smile that he is proud to flash at any girl who will notice. Unlike several other practioners, I never felt rushed despite the slow growth of my son's permanent teeth. I also was never pushed to pay and did not feel proceedures were done to increase revenue. I was especially impressed with how efficiently the office is managed. Wait times are minimal. Whatever schedule changes we required, sometimes with little notice, were cheerfully switched for a new time. I trust the care my son receives there and highly recommend the practice.

Orchin Orthodontics is proud to announce that we will be participating in Treats for the Troops this year. As all of our patients know, not all candy is appliance-friendly. We are asking our patients to donate the treats they are not supposed to eat so we may give them to a parent who will ship them to our Troops in the Middle East.

We will start taking donations immediately after Halloween through November 15th. Ask Dr. Orchin: What, exactly, are wisdom teeth?

Dr. Andrew Orchin had the pleasure to be quoted in an e-book titled, "The Wise Guide to Wisdom Teeth Extraction" by Dr. H. Ryan Kazemi, a dental colleague of ours.

Here's what Dr. Orchin had to say about Dr. Kazemi's book:

Wisdom teeth are a type of molar that is found in the very back of your mouth and are the last molars to develop. There are four wisdom teeth: upper left, upper right, lower left, and lower right. These teeth usually appear in late teens or early twenties but may become impacted (fail to erupt) due to lack of room in the jaw or angle of entry. The removal of wisdom teeth has become so commonplace that it is almost a rite of passage for young adults.

October is National Orthodontic Health Month!

For our staff at Orchin Orthodontics, it's hard to believe October is already upon us! October marks National Orthodontic Health Month, and this month-long event is organized by our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO.

We know there are many treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters who are going through treatment at Orchin Orthodontics, and these treats may cause damage that could prolong your treatment time. The AAO recommends our patients avoid the following Halloween treats:

• Caramel
• Nuts
• Popcorn (including un-popped kernels)
• Taffy
• Jelly beans
• Hard pretzels
• Licorice
• Bubblegum
• Taco chips
• Ice

If you damage your braces, please give Dr. Andrew Orchin and our staff a call immediately. Typically, small problems can be solved by giving us a call. Loose brackets or wires can usually be made more comfortable by applying some wax until the you can come into our office, located at 5301 Wisconsin Ave., NW, Suite 200.

"Hey, Dr. Orchin! Which foods should I avoid?"

There are a variety of foods Dr. Andrew Orchin wants you to avoid while you're wearing braces. Some foods can occasionally damage braces, but certain foods can bend the wires or even break the brackets on your braces. If you’re wearing braces, you should avoid starch, sugar and gummy foods, as these foods can be difficult to remove during brushing. Foods that are high in sugar and starch tend to cause plaque, cavities and even tooth decay.

Avoid tough meats, hard breads and raw vegetables such as carrots and celery. Before long, you'll be able to bite a cucumber again. But you'll need to protect your orthodontic appliances when you eat for as long as you're wearing braces.

Foods you should avoid
• Chewy foods: bagels, hard rolls, licorice
• Crunchy foods: popcorn, ice, chips
• Sticky foods: caramels, gum
• Hard foods: nuts, candy
• Foods you have to bite into: corn on the cob, apples, carrots
• Chewing on hard things (for example, pens, pencils or fingernails) can damage the braces. Damaged braces will cause treatment to take longer.

Braces today are “cool” and—many would say—even “fun.” These were among the findings of a 2010 nationwide survey of moms whose children are going through or have had orthodontic treatment. New technologies such as SureSmile, Invisalign and SPEED braces, advanced computer software, color options, and even popular celebrities—Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning and Serena Williams, to name a few—sporting stylish braces are making orthodontic treatment more comfortable, fashionable and cool for today’s teens.

The study, conducted on behalf of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists, found 86 percent of moms reporting that braces are cooler today than when they were children. Sixty-nine percent of moms also said wearing braces makes their children feel cool, and 81 percent reported their children’s experience with orthodontic treatment as either positive or extremely positive.

Different color options and the ability to change colors, for example, provide exciting ways for young patients to customize appearances. That enthusiasm helps them to feel good about their orthodontic treatment with Dr. Andrew Orchin, and may contribute to the success of treatment.

Dr. Andrew Orchin, reminding you to wear your mouth guards

With the hot and sultry Dog Days summer here for another four weeks, our staff at Orchin Orthodontics would like to take this time to remind all our young athletes wearing braces to take care of both your mouth and appliances while participating in contact sports (and non-contact sports) this fall. After all, we know this is a busy time of year sports-wise, whether kids are playing soccer in the park or practicing for high school football.

Remember, only by using a mouth guard can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. All you have to do? Ask us. Dr. Orchin will provide one for you (at no additional charge). It is important that you do not use one of the fitted “boil at home” mouth guards while you are in orthodontic treatment. We are working hard to move your teeth, which means that any fitted mouth guard will work against us and slow down or halt your orthodontic progress.

What are our SureSmile patients saying?

Now that we are well underway with SureSmile treatment at Orchin Orthodontics, we have some additional information from our SureSmile patients that will be beneficial to our patients who are getting ready for their scans to start the SureSmile process.

All of our patients agree that they are very impressed with the movement created by their SureSmile wire. Most patients reported being fairly sore the first day or two after having their first wire inserted. The discomfort was soothed by taking Advil® or Tylenol® and keeping foods on the softer side (fish, meatloaf, pasta and shredded chicken are among the favorites).

Cold temperatures relax the wires, so SureSmile recommends eating cold food and beverages to ease the ache. The flip side is to eat hot food and beverages to speed up the movement of the wires to push through the ache faster.

We have had patients try both and they report each method works so you decide which you would like to try. All SureSmile patients agree that any discomfort was well-worth it to see great results in such a brief time period. A patient just left our office and is so excited to get his braces off three months early due to SureSmile! Most patients need two-to-three wires and have told us that the subsequent wire changes are similar to traditional wire changes here. It is the first wire that packs a punch!

Ask Dr. Orchin: What happens if I miss a visit due to summer plans?

Most of us take a vacation during summer and often it can delay a regular orthodontic visit. Please do not worry if your plans take you away from the DC area during summer and you are not able to make it to Dr. Orchin’s office. The worst case scenario is that it will extend your time in orthodontic treatment. Since we use the best wires available, this is minimized because our wires are active over a long period of time. If you will be gone for an extended period (more than 6 weeks), we recommend you come in for a visit prior to leaving and schedule another visit shortly after your return.

In most cases, a delay in one visit does not extend treatment. In fact, having loose/broken brackets and failure to wear elastics are far more likely to extend your time in braces. On that note, please remember not to indulge in hard, sticky and chewy treats while enjoying your vacation. We look forward to seeing you soon and hearing about your adventures!

Fourth of July safety tips from Orchin Orthodontics!

This Sunday - which happens to be Independence Day - Dr. Andrew Orchin and our staff will be busy celebrating our nation's 234th birthday. For most folks, the Fourth of July is a chance to celebrate and commemorate the anniversary of the signing of America's Declaration of Independence. It's also a time for people to pay homage to all our soldiers, past and present - who lost their lives in battle - and the brave servicemen - and women - who continue to place themselves in danger every day so that we may continue to enjoy our freedoms.

Whatever you might be doing over Independence Day weekend, our entire staff would like to offer these safety tips for your well-being.

*Only light one firework at a time, and never have any part of your body over fireworks.
*If you must be out in the heat, limit your activities to morning and evening hours and drink plenty of fluids, but only those that contain little to no sugar. Water is preferable.
*Planning on swimming? Never go into the water unless you know how deep it is.
*If you fall and hit your head and you begin to feel nauseous or lightheaded, seek medical attention immediately.
*Heading out? Remember to wear sunscreen: wearing SPF 15 helps, but you should reapply it every couple of hours, especially after swimming or sweating in the sun.
*Finally, remember to avoid ribs, corn on the cob and other hard or sticky foods that can damage your braces!

That is a question we get a lot at our office and it does not have a simple answer. Just as every patient is individual, so are their treatment plans which directly affects the investment for orthodontic treatment. Some patients do not require full orthodontic treatment while others find themselves in braces for more than 2 years.

Our treatment fee reflects the amount of orthodontic work required to complete the treatment plan. The only way to find out how much braces will cost is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Andrew Orchin. During your consultation, Dr. Orchin will perform a complete oral examination, listen to your concerns, explain how he will address your concerns and correct any orthodontic problems found during the exam.

Dr. Orchin and team, reminding you to wear your retainers this summer!

As we start our summer, Orchin Orthodontics wants to remind our patients in retainers that it is very important to continue to wear your retainer as prescribed even while away for vacations and camps.

If you are away from home and only wearing your retainer at night, here is a helpful tip – after removing and brushing your retainer in the morning, place it back in the case and then put it with your PJ’s or on your pillow. That way you have a reminder to put your retainer back in at night.

Now that we’re in June, Dr. Orchin and team thought we’d tell you June is National Smile Month, which is a great time to remind all our patients to practice good oral hygiene between your visits to Orchin Orthodontics.

Here are a few simple steps you can take to improve your oral health so that you may celebrate National Smile Month for many, many more years to come:

* Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Here's a helpful video showing you how to brush with your braces on.
* Floss everyday to thoroughly clean between your teeth.
* Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks during your orthodontic treatment with Dr. Orchin.
* Visit your general dentist regularly (usually every six months apart).

SureSmile, the robotic technology we've discussed so much in the past couple of months, was at it again this past week, featured not only on CNN, but on NBC Tuesday night. The segment featured 13-year-old Olivia, who had traditional braces for eight months before discovering the magic of SureSmile orthodontic treatment. Thanks to SureSmile, Olivia will be out of braces in just 14 months!

The contest - "How Orthodontics Changed My Life" - is all about you and your tale with Orchin Orthodontics. Tell the AAO your story about treatment at Orchin Orthodontics and you may just win a $2,500 scholarship!

The deadline is Monday, June 1st.

The AAO's contest guidelines provide instructions to contestants on submitting their videos, which are to be submitted on DVDs or USB flash drives and accompanied by a signed release. By July 1st, the two winners will be announced. Finalists will be notified by phone or email before June 15 and winners will be notified by phone or email before July 1st.

Talkin' elastics with Dr. Orchin

The purpose of elastics (rubber bands) is to apply a force on selected teeth to help them “fit” better and correct your bite. Elastics can move teeth in a way that cannot be done with braces alone. Failure to wear your elastics, as instructed, will result in treatment running
longer than expected. It may also affect the finished orthodontic treatment result.

When you first start wearing the elastics, they may make your teeth sore. If you continue wearing them as instructed, that discomfort will go away in a couple of days.

If you break or lose a rubber band, replace immediately. Always carry a spare pack of rubber bands in your pocket. You will be asked to wear your elastics either full-time or every night.

FULL-TIME WEAR

Rubber bands are to be worn 24-hours per day, except when brushing your teeth, unless stated otherwise by Dr. Orchin or your orthodontic assistant. Please wear your elastics all the time. Remove them only for brushing and flossing your teeth. Insert new elastics after brushing and flossing. Try to keep fresh elastics on your teeth
at all times (they lose their force after several hours).

NIGHT-TIME WEAR

Please wear your elastics every night (sleep in them). Now let’s go back and repeat that together – wear your elastics every night (not some nights).

If you lose your elastics or run out, just call our office or email us and we can send you more.

Why the big deal? Because these elastics are your ticket to the fastest, most ideal result you can get. Unfortunately, they just don’t work unless they are worn as prescribed.

By wearing your elastics as instructed, you will be doing your part in keeping your orthodontic treatment on schedule.

Ask Dr. Orchin: What does it feel like to be scanned by the SureSmile Orascanner?

Have you heard about our new SureSmile offer? We thought we'd pass along some more information about what exactly happens during your visit to be scanned:

The first thing that will happen at your scanning visit is our staff will remove your wires and take new records, which include photographs and X-rays. We will ask you to rinse with Listerine prior to sitting down in the chair, and then it will be time for your scan. After you are seated in the chair, an assistant will place cheek retractors in your mouth (similar to the ones we use during your photographs but you do not have to hold these in place). We then use air to dry your teeth before painting SureWhite on your teeth. SureWhite has alcohol in it and will feel like Listerine in your mouth but just until it is dry and then you will not notice it. We then use the air to dry the SureWhite.

Now it is time to scan.

The wand for the OraScanner has a mirror on it and it flashes white light while making a “rat-tat-tat” noise. The noise lets us know it is taking pictures. The assistant maneuvers the scanner over your teeth carefully picking up every surface – it will take about 1,000 pictures for each the upper and lower arch. We work in sections so that the area stays dry and then apply SureWhite and use air as needed until the scan is complete.

After we finish both arches, we take a bite registration – we scan about 5 teeth while you have your upper and lower teeth contacting each other. The whole time you are being scanned you can see the image coming up on the computer monitor, which is interesting to watch. After you're done, you need to go and brush all of the SureWhite off then have your wires reinserted and you are finished.

We have successfully scanned adults with TMJ issues, as well as teenagers. The most challenging part of the scan is keeping your mouth open and keeping your tongue from licking off the SureWhite. The best part about your scan? Knowing you are on your way having to having your braces removed (generally 4-to-6 months after your scan) and enjoying a beautiful smile.

Ask Dr. Orchin: When should my child come in for a visit?

At Orchin Orthodontics, knowing when to treat patients is just as important as knowing how to treat patients.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children see an orthodontist by age seven. This allows the orthodontist to make an early assessment for possible skeletal problems such as a severe cross-bite (narrow jaw), overjet (protrusive upper teeth), underbite (upper front teeth are behind the lower front teeth), or any other problem that is best treated while the patient is growing. Dr. Orchin uses appliances that are designed to capture growth and correct the malocclusion. Dr. Orchin has the experience to know when it is best to start treatment and when to step back and allow Mother Nature to do her work.

If you or a family member is already in treatment with Dr. Orchin, we are able to schedule a no charge look-see appointment for a younger sibling. The importance of retainers, from Orchin Orthodontics

OK, you've completed your orthodontic work and you’ve revealed your new smile. You are proud and excited and then Dr. Orchin presents you with a retainer to wear.

What is the deal?

Every orthodontic treatment plan at Orchin Orthodontics includes a retention phase. Dr. Orchin’s years of experience has taught him that retention is one of the most important phases of orthodontic treatment. Orchin Orthodontics has learned that wearing your retainer(s) as directed is the most important factor in maintaining your orthodontic result. Dr. Orchin recommends that all of our patients keep their retainer (forever) and wear it once a week even after they are released from our care. If a removable retainer breaks or needs adjustments, simply give us a call at 202-684-9227.

Most of Dr. Orchin’s patients have a fixed lower lingual retainer (also called a permanent retainer) to maintain the lower teeth. Many patients ask us why we do not remove it. Here is the answer; it is the best insurance plan you can buy. Teeth remain mobile and do tend to drift forward as we age and the lower lingual is a great tool for preventing that. It is important to brush and floss as directed as well as maintain regular hygiene visits with the general dentist. The patient’s general dentist will monitor the lower lingual and advise if it needs to be removed or replaced.

Ask Dr. Orchin: Am I too old for orthodontic treatment?

Over the years I have heard many responses from adults when they find out that their orthodontic treatment plan includes braces. I have heard everything from “Wearing braces will make me look too young to be taken seriously in my career” to “There is no way I will wear braces.” More often than not adults are especially disappointed when they hear that we can not correct their alignment with Invisalign treatment. While Invisalign is a phenomenal product that we often use, it does have limitations and is not indicated for certain treatment plans.

Here is what I have discovered after over the last 9 years: the only regret I ever hear after orthodontic treatment is complete is “Why didn’t I do this sooner?” When we give the treatment plan which includes the length of time in braces, patients' initial response is “that long”? All our patients feel that way and what they have found is, the time goes by quickly and is a small price to pay for a beautiful smile that will last.

The best news is that we now offer SureSmile, which means that we can move teeth more efficiently in less time. In fact, most patients are able to subtract 1/3 of their treatment time when they are SureSmile patients. That means the average time in treatment for adults is only 10-14 months. I don’t know about you, but I would definitely spend a year in braces so that I could enjoy all of the benefits of a beautiful smile. A smile is the universal sign of happiness and confidence. It is something that most of us give willingly but many are too shy to share a smile due to crooked teeth.

As an orthodontic professional, I simply can not see any reason not to improve your smile if you are self-conscious about it. Yes, there are other reasons to have orthodontics, which include improving a malocclusion (bad bite) and having periodontal issues that are corrected by having the teeth in a more favorable position. These reasons should not be overlooked and are in fact, the most common reasons for an adult to be referred to us for orthodontic treatment. If you already have an underlying condition that would improve with orthodontics, there is no excuse not to give yourself the gift of improved health. A beautiful smile is just an additional bonus.

Patients in orthodontic treatment ask questions. They want to know specifics, they want to know logistics and they want to make sure they've made the right decision. With Orchin Orthodontics, they can be rest assured they have. Here are a sample of most frequent questions that patients ask our dedicated staff. If you have a question, but don't see it on the list below, please give our office a call and one of our staff members will be happy to answer any question you may have!

Q: Do braces hurt to put on?
A: No, it does not hurt to put braces on. The sealant we brush on the teeth to help hold the bracket on smells bad for a few seconds. The appointment for full braces is an easy visit that lasts about 90 minutes and the patient leaves with brackets and wires.

Q: Do braces hurt?
A: No, You may have some soreness by dinner time. Many patients report that their teeth feel loose or achy. We recommend you keep your food soft for the first couple of days. For example, if you want red meat, have hamburger instead of steak. Take Tylenol, Advil or whatever you take for pain. It may a few days to adjust to braces. Some patients find it helpful to repeat these steps after having their wires changed. Every patient is unique and you will figure out what works best for you.

Q: How often do I have to come in for adjustments?
A: The time will vary, but it’s usually every 6-8 weeks. You will be informed of the date you are due for your next visit before you leave the office. In order to secure the time you prefer, we strongly encourage you to stop at the front desk to schedule that appointment before leaving the office. Remember that most of the patients in the office with you are due to return for another visit about the same you are.

Q: Do you have colored braces?
A: No, We utilize SPEED Braces which are about 1/3 the size of traditional braces. SPEED Braces do not need external colored elastics to hold the wires in because they are very high tech and have integrated clips that secure the wires.

Q: Can I get colors?
A: No, SPEED Braces only come in silver metal. On occasion we use a “chain” and the chain comes in many color choices – we will let you choose your favorite color.

Q: Will my teeth be stained after the braces come off?
A: Not if you follow our brushing and flossing techniques and maintain regular dental cleanings with your general dentist. If we notice that your hygiene needs improvement, we will revisit the brushing and flossing techniques with you and may recommend you see your dentist every 3 or 4 months for a professional cleaning while in active orthodontic treatment. Please remember we are trying to help you, not criticize you. It is our intention to give you the best result possible. We do everything we can to minimize the time our patients wear braces which also helps avoid staining of the teeth.

Q: Will the braces affect my speech?
A: No, braces do not usually interfere with articulation.

Q: How long will my braces be on?
A: Every treatment plan is different, so the length time varies. Dr. Orchin will let you know how long you can expect to be in braces before you start treatment.

Q: What do I do if something breaks?
A: If you are uncomfortable, call the office. If we are closed, there will be a number on our voicemail to reach the doctor. If you are comfortable, please wait until your next scheduled appointment.

Q: If I play sports, do I need a new mouth guard or can I wear the one I already have?
A: If you wear a mouth guard, we will provide one for you (at no additional charge). It is important that you do not use one of the fitted “boil at home” mouth guards while you are in orthodontic treatment. We are moving your teeth which means that any fitted mouth guard will work against us and slow down or halt your orthodontic progress.

Q: Will the braces irritate my mouth?
A: Yes, sometimes your mouth will get irritated from the brackets until it becomes callused. SPEED Braces have rounded edges to help minimize the discomfort but there is still and adjustment period. If your mouth becomes sensitive, we provide wax for you apply which helps with the irritation. We will automatically give you wax the day we place the brackets. You may pick up extra wax if needed at your next appointment or any drug store (near the dental floss).

When is a general or pediatric dentist just not enough?

Can a general or pediatric dentist perform orthodontic treatment? The legal answer is "yes." More and more general and pediatric dentists are taking on orthodontics as a way to increase their business and client base.

But... should you allow a general or pediatric dentist to treat you or your family with orthodontics? While we realize this is a personal decision, we feel it is very important that the practitioner you choose is certified by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). Being a member of the AAO ensures that the professional you have selected to perform treatment has completed four years of dental school and a minimum of two years in an accredited residency program. AAO orthodontists are better qualified and have more extensive training in the movement of teeth than any of their peers.

Orthodontists should be the only professional performing Dentofacial Orthopedics. What is Dentofacial Orthopedics? Dentofacial orthopedics involves the guidance of facial growth and development, which occurs largely during childhood. The most common appliances utilized by Orchin Orthodontics to accomplish this movement are Maxillary Expanders, Reverse Pull Headgears and Twin Blocks. Dentofacial Orthopedics requires the care, skill and judgment that both Dr. Andrew M. Orchin and Dr. Jeremy D. Orchin are known for.

The patient must be closely monitored during treatment, requiring Dr. Orchin to take measurements and stop the movement as soon as the desired results are achieved. Orchin Orthodontics continues to monitor the patient’s growth and development until the patient is ready to be evaluated for further orthodontics if necessary. Often we can negate the need for further orthodontics utilizing Dentofacial Orthopedics. It is important to remember that a well-trained orthodontist knows when to treat as well as when treatment is not indicated or is not essential (more of an aesthetic issue).

With patient cooperation, SPEED Braces also reduce time in treatment for patients.

Orchin Orthodontics, the leader in Orthognathic surgery

Orchin Orthodontics has the most experience with Orthognathic surgery (jaw surgery) patients in the DC area (perhaps even the entire East Coast). We successfully complete 50-70 cases every year. Most orthodontists only complete a fraction of that over their entire careers. What does that mean to our patients? We have the knowledge to correctly diagnose a skeletal discrepancy and determine if Orthognathic surgery is indeed indicated. This is important because so many orthodontists attempt to camouflage the skeletal discrepancy rather than proceed with a surgery case. Camouflaging this condition is almost always doomed to failure which can lead to further deterioration of the teeth and underlying structures (gums and bones). The alignment of the teeth may also relapse necessitating retreatment of the orthodontics combined with Orthognathic surgery.

Knowing when to start the orthodontics in preparation for orthognathic surgery can also be tricky if we are treating a teenager. It is important to know when to get started. If orthodontic treatment is initiated too soon and the teenager is still growing, the patient will either need to hold in braces until his/her growth is complete and they are ready for surgery or the braces will have to be removed and then placed again when growth is complete. Neither of these options is attractive since it requires longer time in treatment which is something all patients want to avoid. Mouth guards and sports injuries, with Orchin Orthodontics

At Orchin Orthodontics we know how important it is to protect your face while playing sports. Spring is around the corner, and the spring months bring an increase in outdoor activities and a greater chance of damaging your precious mouth and pearly whites. Dr. Andrew and our team also know sports-related injuries are common among children. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, 70 percent of parents said their biggest worry is that their child will get hurt while playing sports.

That’s why Orchin Orthodontics is doing our part to spread the word that facial sports injuries can be avoided simply by reminding your kids to wear mouth guards. Ask us—Dr. Andrew will provide a mouth guard for any patient in active treatment at no additional charge. In addition, the AAO has provided the following tips for keeping your kids safe on the field. Please remind them to:

• Wear mouth guards during contact sports
• Wear a helmet
• Stretch before and after a game or practice
• Wear protective eye wear
• Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
• Be observant—even as a spectator

All of these can reduce injuries. Only by using a mouth guard and other forms of facial protection can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. Why do we charge our patients a consultation fee? Our doctors carve out time in their schedule to sit down and meet with you. Dr. Orchin will take the time to get to know you and your dental concerns and formulate a specific treatment plan just for you. During the exam Dr. Orchin takes the time to explain his findings to you and has the gift of explaining the findings in a way that you will understand. The team at Orchin Orthodontics wants you to be informed of the diagnosis and our treatment plan so that you are able to make the best decision on orthodontic treatment. Before you leave our office you will know what type of treatment is indicated for you, what is involved in the treatment, how long you will be in treatment and the exact cost of treatment. Our fees are all inclusive, meaning that there are no hidden or extra fees for x-rays taken during treatment, emergency visit, broken fixed appliances, or retention visits. These extra fees can add up to hundreds of dollars if they are not included.

A great braces-friendly fall recipe! From Orchin Orthodontics

Fall is here, and sometimes we here at Orchin Orthodontics just feel like a hot delicious meal is in order. Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) made an appetizing (and braces-friendly!) fall dish that is sure to delight. Remember, a healthy diet provides essential nutrients and helps you achieve the best possible result from your orthodontic treatment.

Pasta Pomodorini
Ingredients:
•¾ pound spaghetti or spaghetti
•¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling
•¼ cup sliced garlic
•½ teaspoon finely minced Calabrian chilies, or 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
•1 pint small cherry tomatoes, stems removed, crushed between your thumb and forefinger
•Sea salt, preferably gray salt
•½ cup fresh basil leaves, each torn into 2 or 3 pieces
•Wedge of Parmesan cheese

Directions
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the pasta. While the pasta cooks, heat the 1/4 cup olive oil in a large skillet over moderate heat. Add the garlic and cook until the slivers are golden brown and crisp, then add the chilies and cook for about 30 seconds. Raise the heat to high and add the tomatoes. Simmer briskly to soften the tomatoes and thicken the juices, about 3 minutes. Season with salt. When the pasta is al dente, scoop out about 1/2 cup of the pasta cooking water, then drain the pasta. Return the pasta to the warm pot off the heat. Add the sauce and the basil and mix well. Add some of the reserved cooking water if the pasta seems dry. Transfer to a warmed serving bowl and grate Parmesan over the top to taste. Drizzle with a little more olive oil. Serve immediately. Makes 4 servings.

Preparing for Cold and Flu Season, from Orchin Orthodontics

Traditionally cold and flu season starts in Fall, but this year it seems to have started much earlier and with the number of patients canceling appointments because of flu and H1N1 symptoms Drs. Orchin and Orchin Orthodontics are taking additional precautions to help prevent the spread of germs.

To promote a healthy and clean environment, we give a great deal of attention to sanitation and sterilization in our office at all times as well as following all requirements for sterilizing instruments and work surfaces.

For the protection of other patients and our staff, we always ask that patients reschedule their appointments if they have any type of cold or illness that can infect others.

Maintaining and protecting oral hygiene equipment is also important this flu season. To protect your toothbrush from bacteria follow these steps:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing
• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen
• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster
• Replace toothbrush after every cold or flu or every 3-4 months when bristles appear worn

Preventing Gum Disease and Protecting your Teeth!

It is estimated that around 80 percent of American adults are currently diagnosed with some form of gum disease. Also known as, periodontal disease or periodontitis, gum disease starts with gum inflammation and can end with major damage to the bone and tissue holding the teeth in place, resulting in tooth loss and irreversible damage to the gums. Many doctors and researchers have also found gum disease to be the cause of several other health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, and complications for women during pregnancy. Gum disease is a serious dental health condition, and by understanding how gum disease is caused, what symptoms to look for, and how you can prevent it, you will be able to keep your smile healthy for many years to come.

What causes gum disease?

Your mouth is full of bacteria, and when the bacteria are left in your mouth, it can cause a sticky, colorless film over your tooth surface called plaque. Brushing your teeth regularly and flossing can help to remove much of the plaque build-up on your teeth; however, if you do not brush and floss regularly, the plaque on your teeth can harden and turn into tartar. Tartar cannot be removed by a toothbrush, only your dentist has the special tools needed to remove tartar from your tooth’s surface.

Eventually, if left untreated, the tartar and plaque on your teeth will cause gingivitis. Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease and is usually curable if caught early enough. Signs of gingivitis include:

• Red, swollen gums
• Gums that bleed when you brush and floss
• Gums that pull away from your teeth
• Pockets between your teeth and gums where food gets caught
• Persistent bad breath

If you have gingivitis, and it is left untreated, you may end up with gum disease. Gum disease causes the gums to pull completely away from the teeth and form infected pockets. The bacteria in your mouth and on your teeth will start to break down the tissue and bone that supports your teeth and holds them in place. Gum disease that is left untreated will lead to the extraction or loss of teeth. Most people do not show signs of gingivitis and gum disease until they are in their 30s, 40s, or older. Certain risk factors can increase your chance of getting gum disease, including:

• Smoking
• Diabetes
• Stress
• Certain prescription medications
• Illness
• Genetics

How can I prevent gum disease?

You can help your chances of never getting gingivitis or gum disease simply by taking care of your teeth and gums on a regular basis. Here are some of the ways you can help keep your smile healthy:

• Brush your teeth at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste approved by the ADA.
• Floss at least once every day to remove food stuck between your teeth and along the gum line.
• Visit your dentist for routine, general checkups and teeth cleaning every six months.
• Eat a well balanced diet, including fruits and vegetables.
• Stay away from using tobacco products of any kind.

National Dental Hygiene Month

Did you know that October is National Dental Hygiene Month? Fall is here, and Halloween is coming soon, but now it is more important than ever to maintain good oral hygiene.

All those sweet, sour and sticky candies may taste great, but these treats can damage your teeth and braces too! Did you know sour candies can be acidic to your teeth, and actually wear down the enamel that protects them? This can cause tooth decay and cavities! After eating these candies, be sure to wash your mouth out with water, drink milk or eat a few slices of cheese. These will help neutralize the acid in your mouth (wait at least one hour before brushing your teeth with toothpaste, as this can actually increase the effects of acid on your teeth)

Besides cavities and tooth decay, many people do not realize that good oral health and hygiene are important to your overall health too! Research is discovering the connection between periodontal disease and other major health concerns, such as heart disease! Therefore, it is important to maintain a good oral hygiene routine: see your dentist every six months, brush and floss daily and use an antibacterial mouthwash.

While mouthwash is not an alternative to regular brushing and flossing, it can help keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy. There are several different types of mouthwashes available, and all of them will help do different things for your smile. The most common types of mouthwashes are:

• Fluoride - fluoride is the most used type of mouthwash available, and is used to strengthen the enamel of the teeth while preventing cavities and tooth decay.

• Antiseptic - an antiseptic mouthwash is used to kill bacteria and germs in the mouth. Most commonly used before and after a dental surgery, antiseptic mouthwashes can also help to fight gum disease, and halitosis (chronic bad breath). Antiseptic mouthwashes can affect your sense of taste and may stain the teeth, so it is recommended that you consult your dentist before using this type of mouthwash.

• Combination - a combination mouthwash is designed to help prevent tooth decay, freshen the breath, and maintain the health of your smile.

• Prescription - for patients with gum disease, or any signs of gum disease, you may need a prescription mouthwash. Prescription mouthwashes, like Peridex of PerioGard, are used to treat gingivitis, and other forms of decay.

There are also many different brands of mouthwash. Some common brands include:

• Scope
• Listerine
• Act
• Crest
• Tom’s of Maine (all-natural)
• Plax (anti-plaque rinse)
• Breath Rx
• Orajel
• Targon (special mouthwash made for smokers)

Imagining Your Life With Invisalign

Are you wondering what Invisalign treatment is really like, and what effect it will have on your day-to-day activities? Will it slur your speech? Will people know you're in treatment? You're not alone in your concerns! Following are a list of questions and answers for anyone pondering Invisalign treatment.

How exactly does Invisalign work?

Using 3-D computer imaging technology, Invisalign creates a series of custom-made, clear aligners exclusively for your teeth, based on the treatment plan that we specify for you. Each aligner moves teeth incrementally and is worn for about two weeks, then replaced by the next in the series until the final position is achieved.

Will I experience pain during treatment?

Most people experience temporary discomfort for a few days after a new aligner is placed. This feeling of pressure is normal and is a sign that Invisalign is working by sequentially moving your teeth to their final destination.

Can other people see that I'm in treatment?

One of the benefits of Invisalign is that the aligners are clear. You can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing.

Can I smoke during treatment?

We discourage smoking while wearing the aligners as they may become discolored.

Are there any foods I cannot eat while in treatment?

You can eat normally during the entire course of treatment. One of the advantages of Invisalign is that the aligners are removable. Simply take the aligners out before each meal, brush when you're finished eating, then reinsert the aligners afterward.

What about chewing gum?

We recommend removing your aligners for all meals and snacks, as gum and other chewy substances can stick to the aligners.

How often must I wear my aligners?

Aligners should be worn all day, except when eating, brushing, and flossing.

Will my speech be affected by the aligners?

As with any orthodontic treatment, aligners may temporarily affect your speech. If this does happen, your tongue will adjust within a day or two and your speech should return to normal.

How can I clean my aligners?

The best way to clean your aligners is by brushing and rinsing them in lukewarm water.

How often must I visit your office during treatment?

For most patients, visits every 4-6 weeks are frequent enough for us to determine that your treatment is progressing properly. Dr. Orchin will provide you with a specific schedule that supports your individual treatment plan.

There are so many questions about orthodontics that we never ask, so Dr. Orchin took some time to explain the most common concerns.

At what age should orthodontic treatment occur?

Orthodontic treatment can be started at any age. Many orthodontic problems are easier to correct if detected at an early age before jaw growth has slowed. Early treatment may mean that a patient can avoid surgery and more serious complications. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child first visit an orthodontist by age seven or earlier if a problem is detected by parents, the family dentist or the child's physician.

What is Phase I and Phase II treatment?

Phase I, or early interceptive treatment, is limited orthodontic treatment (i.e. expander, Herbst, Facemask, headgear, or partial braces) before all of the permanent teeth have erupted. Such treatment can occur between the ages of six and ten. This treatment is sometimes recommended to make more space for developing teeth, correction of crossbites, overbites, underbites, or harmful oral habits. Phase II treatment is also called comprehensive treatment, because it involves full braces when all of the permanent teeth have erupted, usually between the ages of eleven and thirteen.

Would an adult patient benefit from orthodontics?

Absolutely!! Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age. Everyone wants a beautiful and healthy smile. Between 30-40% of our patients are adults.

How does orthodontic treatment work?

Braces use steady gentle pressure to gradually move teeth into their proper positions. The brackets that are placed on your teeth and the arch wire that connects them are the main components. When the arch wire is placed into the brackets, it tries to return to its original shape. As it does so, it applies pressure to move your teeth to their new, more ideal positions.

How long does orthodontic treatment take?

Treatment times vary on a case-by-case basis, but the average time is from one to two years. Actual treatment time can be affected by rate of growth and severity of the correction necessary. Treatment length is also dependent upon patient compliance. Maintaining good oral hygiene and keeping regular appointments are important in keeping your treatment time on schedule.

Do braces hurt?

The placement of bands and brackets on your teeth does not hurt. Once your braces are placed and connected with the arch wires, you may feel some soreness of your teeth for one to four days. Your lips and cheeks may need one to two weeks to get used to the braces on your teeth.

Will braces interfere with playing sports?

No. It is recommended, however, that patients protect their smiles by wearing a mouth guard when participating in any sporting activity. Mouth guards are inexpensive, comfortable, and come in a variety of colors and patterns.

Will braces interfere with playing musical instruments?

No. However, there may be an initial period of adjustment. In addition, brace covers or wax can be provided to prevent discomfort.

Should I see my general dentist while I have braces?

Yes, you should continue to see your general dentist every six months for cleaning and dental checkups, or more frequently as recommended.

Everybody knows that smoking causes lung cancer, but did you also know that smokers and tobacco are susceptible to a variety of oral health problems at a faster rate than non-smokers?

It’s true! Smoking is responsible for almost 75% of gum disease in adults; and, similar to smokers, adults who smoke pipes and cigars, as well as those using smokeless tobacco, are just as susceptible to gum disease and other tobacco related health problems.

As soon as you use tobacco products, you become more likely to experience any of these oral-health problems:

• Oral cancer
• Gum disease
• Tooth loss
• Loss of bone in the jaw
• Gum recession
• Delayed/impaired healing process after oral surgery or any other treatment
• Decreased success rate of dental implant (tooth replacement) procedures
• Mouth sores
• Loss of your sense of taste and smell
• Bad breath
• Tooth and tongue stains

Softly Brushing Your Way to Clean Teeth, From Orchin Orthodontics

Just as there are so many different types of toothbrushes to choose from, each brush also has a different type of bristle! There are generally three different types of bristles; hard, medium, and soft. We always recommend that our patients, especially children and seniors, use a soft bristled toothbrush.

Using a hard and medium bristled brush can actually harm your teeth and gums by stripping the enamel from the teeth and irritating the gums so that they become red and sore, and can even cause gum recession. If you do use a hard or medium bristled brush as a personal preference, we recommend using an electric toothbrush.

Soft bristles are much gentler on your teeth and gums, and while patients of all ages are recommended to use soft bristled brushes, they are particularly great for children, seniors, patients recovering from a dental procedure, and patients wearing braces.

Soft bristles, and even extra-soft bristles are every bit as effective when it comes to cleaning your teeth; in fact, if you currently use a hard or medium bristled brush, try a soft bristled brush next time you buy a toothbrush and we bet you won’t even notice a difference!

There are so many ways you protect your teeth throughout your orthodontic treatment at Orchin Orthodontics. You brush your teeth twice a day, floss regularly and protect your mouth and appliances from being damaged. But did you know there is another, often forgotten about, way to keep your teeth clean and healthy during your treatment? Fluoride – a mineral that helps prevent cavities and tooth decay – can help keep your teeth strong! Fluoride comes in two varieties, topical and systemic. Topical fluoride is applied directly to the tooth. Topical fluoride includes toothpastes and mouth rinses. Systemic fluorides are swallowed in the form of a dietary supplement. Dentists and orthodontists use in-office fluoride treatments to help protect the oral health of adults and children undergoing dental/orthodontic procedures.

Fluoride used in the dentist/orthodontists office is often times a stronger concentration than in toothpaste or mouthwash, but is available at some drug stores or a pharmacy (ask your doctor how to purchase professional strength fluoride). A fluoride treatment typically takes just a few minutes. After the treatment patients may be asked not to rinse, eat or drink for at least 30 minutes in order to allow the teeth to absorb the fluoride. Depending on your oral health or doctor’s recommendation, you may be required to have a fluoride treatment every three, six or 12 months. Your doctor may also prescribe a fluoride product such as mouthwashes, gels or antibacterial rinses for at-home treatment.

When choosing your own fluoride product be sure to check for the American Dental Association’s (ADA) seal of acceptance. Products marked with the ADA seal of approval have been carefully examined and have met the criteria of the ADA for safety and effectiveness. Take care of your teeth, and smile bright!

Losing your first tooth, or any baby tooth for that matter, can be exciting! Your baby tooth may be gone, but in no time you will have a bigger, “grown-up” tooth in its place. So what do you do with the lost tooth? That’s simple…place it under your pillow at night and when you are fast asleep the tooth fairy will come and whisk your tooth away leaving behind a special gift just for you! Here’s a simple craft project We found at Orchin Orthodontics that will help make the tooth fairy’s job a little easier and give your tooth a special place to stay until it is taken away. Tooth Fairy “Tooth” Box
(remember to ask your parents for help when using hot glue and scissors)

What you will need
• 1 large empty match box
• Enough felt to wrap the box and inside sliding tray
• Ribbon
• Glue (tacky glue or a hot glue gun)
• Markers
• White, pink and blue (or your favorite color) felt for decorating the matchbox
• Scissors

Step 1: Pull the inner tray out of the box and line the inside with glue and felt as shown. Wrap the outside of the box with felt and glue it in place.

Step 2: Glue ribbon to the outside of the box in a hanging loop shape. Fold another piece of ribbon in half and glue it to the bottom of the inner tray to create a handle for sliding it in and out.

Step 3: Draw a tooth shape on paper, cut it out, and trace it onto the white felt twice. Cut out the teeth and face details.

Step 4: Decorate the teeth with the eyes and cheeks and draw on a mouth. Glue one tooth to the outside of the box.

Step 5: Create a tooth pocket by applying glue to the sides and bottom of the remaining tooth as shown, leaving an opening at the top. Glue the pocket to the inside tray. Once the glue dries, the box is Tooth Fairy-ready. Have your child put the tooth inside the inner pocket and hang it outside their door before your child goes to bed!

Baby Teeth – and Gums – Need Special Care! Orchin Orthodontics

One question we hear all the time at Orchin Orthodontics is “When should I start brushing my baby’s teeth?”

You should begin regular cleanings even before your baby has teeth. After each breast feeding – or bottle-feeding – use a clean, damp washcloth to gently rub your baby’s gum tissue. You can wrap the material around one finger to make it easier to remove any food bits from your baby’s mouth.

When your baby’s first tooth comes in switch to a baby toothbrush. Look for special baby toothbrushes in your drugstore – they have just a few bristles and are very soft. There are even brushes shaped like finger puppets that fit over the tip of your pointer finger! All you need at this point is water – no toothpaste yet.

After a few more teeth appear, you can start using toothpaste, but you only need a tiny bit, and make sure it doesn’t contain fluoride for the first three years. From the beginning, have your little one practice spitting the toothpaste out after brushing. That way, he or she will already have the good habit of spitting when you switch to fluoride toothpaste, which should never be swallowed.

Elastic Tie: Tiny rubber band that fits around the bracket to hold the archwire in place.

Archwire: The main wire that acts as a track to guide the teeth along. It's changed periodically throughout treatment, as teeth move to their new positions.

Loop in Archwire: Frequently used for closing space left by an extraction. Many archwires don't have a loop.

Bracket: Small attachment that holds the archwire in place. Most often, a bracket is cemented directly onto the tooth's surface, eliminating the need for a band.

Headgear Tube: Round, hollow attachment on the back bands. The inner bow of the headgear fits into it.

Coil Spring: Fits between brackets and over archwire to open space between teeth.

Tie Wire: Fine wire that is twisted around the bracket to hold the archwire in place.

Band: A thin ring of metal fitted around a tooth and cemented in place. The band provides a way to attach the brackets to the tooth.

Hook: Welded or removable arm to which elastics (rubber bands) are attached.

Elastic (Rubber Band): Small rubber band that is hooked between different points on the appliance to provide pressure to move the teeth.

Bottled Water May Be Behind Tooth Troubles

We at Orchin Orthodontics want you to know that as more families turn to bottled water and away from the tap, they may be missing out on one important ingredient that most brands of bottled water fail to include: fluoride!

As of 2005, bottled water is second only to soft drinks as the most popular drink in the United States, beating out milk, juice, and – more significantly – tap water. Between 2001 and 2006, the amount of bottled water sold in the U.S. rose an average of 10% per year. And many dental health specialists point to bottled water’s increased popularity as the culprit behind rising rates of cavities.

Because fluoride helps strengthen teeth, it is an important component of maintaining good oral health. The benefits of fluoride were noticed in the early part of the twentieth century, when researchers found communities with low levels of tooth decay. It turned out that these towns had measurable levels (around 1 part per million) of fluoride in their drinking water.

Beginning in the 1940s, communities have fluoridated their water supplies, and dentists have seen a significant decline in cavities ever since. The American Dental Association endorses both community water fluoridation and the use of fluoride-containing products as a safe means of preventing tooth decay. Between tap water and toothpaste, most of us get sufficient amounts of fluoride.

But if your family avoids fluoridated tap water in favor of ever-more-popular bottled water, you could be missing out on the levels of fluoride necessary to make a difference in your oral health.

If bottled water is your water of choice, check the label to make sure that your brand contains fluoride. As of a 2006 decision, the FDA allows bottled water containing .6 to 1.0 milligrams per liter of fluoride to carry a label stating that fluoridated water may reduce the risk of dental cavities or tooth decay. The ADA has backed this decision.

Of course, simply drinking fluoridated water is not a magic ticket to perfect teeth. To keep your choppers in tip-top shape, it’s important to brush and floss daily and avoid sugary sweets, in addition to maintaining your fluoride intake and visiting us at Orchin Orthondontics regularly.

Lots of you have asked us at Orchin Orthodontics about whether it’s healthy for children to suck thumbs (or, less frequently, fingers). If you’ve got a thumb-sucker in the house, you are not alone. Research tells us that between 75% and 95% of infants suck their thumbs. Is this anything to worry about?

In most cases, no. Sucking is a natural reflex for an infant, and can provide security and contentment as well as relaxation for your little one. It’s a habit that most children grow out of between the ages of 2 and 4.

However, if your child keeps sucking after he’s gotten his permanent teeth, it’s time to take a closer look. If your child sucks his thumb aggressively, putting pressure on the inside of his mouth or his teeth, it could cause problems with tooth alignment and proper mouth growth. If you have been told you have periodontal disease (also known as gum disease or periodontitis), you're not alone. An estimated 80 percent of American adults currently have some form of the disease! Periodontal diseases range from simple gum inflammation to serious disease that results in major damage to the soft tissue and bone that support the teeth. In the worst cases, teeth are lost.

Gum disease is a threat to your oral health. Research is also pointing to health effects of periodontal diseases that go well beyond your mouth. So we at Orchin Orthodontics want to let you know some interesting facts and ways to treat the disease.

What is Periodontal Disease?

"Perio" means around, and "dontal" refers to teeth. Periodontal disease is an infection of the structures around the teeth, including the gums and the bones that hold the teeth. The earliest stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis – an infection of the gums. In more severe forms of the disease, all of the tissues are involved, including the bone. Bacteria that live and reproduce on the teeth and gums cause periodontal disease.

Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

Symptoms may include the following:
--redness or bleeding of gums while brushing teeth or using dental floss
--halitosis, or bad breath
--gum recession, resulting in apparent lengthening of teeth
--"pockets" between the teeth and gums indicating that the bone which holds the teeth in the mouth is dissolving
--loose teeth
Gum inflammation and bone destruction are largely painless. Hence, people may wrongly assume that painless bleeding after teeth cleaning is insignificant, although this may be a symptom of progressing periodontitis. If your hands bled when you washed them, you would be concerned. Yet, many people think it's normal if their gums bleed when they brush or floss.

Periodontal Disease Affects Your Health

Periodontal disease is a putrid, festering infection of the mouth. Bacteria and inflammatory particles can enter the bloodstream through ulcerated and bleeding gums and travel to the heart and other organs. In recent years, gum disease has been linked to a number of health problems. Researchers are studying possible connections between gum disease and:
--Heart disease: Gum disease may increase the risk of heart disease. Gum disease also is believed to worsen existing heart disease.
--Stroke: Gum disease may increase the risk of the type of stroke caused by blocked arteries
--Diabetes: People with diabetes and periodontal disease may be more likely to have trouble controlling their blood sugar than diabetics with healthy gums.
--Premature births: A woman who has gum diseases during pregnancy may be more likely deliver her baby too early and the infant may be more likely to be of low birth weight.

--See your dentist! See your dentist every six months for a checkup! Regular professional cleanings and checkups make you feel good, look good, and could be a lifesaver!
--Brush and floss daily. Take your time and do it right!
--Use an anti-bacterial mouthwash. Daily use of an anti-bacterial mouthwash helps to disinfect the teeth and gums, and reduces the number of bacteria.
--Straighten your teeth. Crowded teeth are nearly impossible to keep clean. Orthodontic treatment can greatly reduce inflammation and periodontal disease.

Oral Piercing: Is It Worth It? Orchin Orthodontics Explains

Piercing, like tattooing, is one of today’s popular forms of “body art” and self-expression. If you’re thinking about getting a piercing – or if you already have one or more – we at Orchin Orthodontics want to share some health risks you should know about.

Your mouth contains millions of bacteria, and infection is a common complication of oral piercing. Just touching your mouth jewelry (tongue barbells and lip and cheek labrettes) can lead to infection. Many people who have piercings tend to regularly touch them – which is a perfect opportunity for bacteria from hands to enter piercing sites. Also, food particles that collect around piercing sites can lead to infection.

Pain and swelling are other possible side effects of piercing. Your tongue – the most popular piercing site in the mouth – could swell large enough to close off your airway! Piercing also can cause uncontrollable bleeding or nerve damage. Damage to the tongue’s blood vessels can cause serious blood loss.

It’s no secret that sweet, sugary candies and drinks have an adverse effect of the health of your smile, but what about sour or tart candies? We at Orchin Orthodontics thought you might want to know what kind of an effect does eating or drinking something sour have on my smile?

Recent research from the Minnesota Dental Association suggests that the amount of acid in sour candies is enough to eat away at tooth enamel and cause cavities. Here are a few souring facts about sour candies, and some helpful tips on how to protect your teeth from Orchin Orthodontics(even if you cannot give up sour candies all together).

Facts

-Sour candies can be very acidic, and may actually burn the gums and cheeks, while weakening and wearing down the enamel on your teeth. (Check the acid levels in some of your favorite candies)

-It can take almost 20 minutes for the acid in sour candies to become neutral. Holding the acid in your mouth by sucking on sour hard candies or chewing sour gummies can keep the acid active for more than 20 minutes.

-The acid in sour candies can cause cavities and severe tooth decay.

Protect your teeth

-Limit the amount of sour candies that you eat on a daily basis, and if you do indulge, remember not to suck or chew on sour candies for long periods of time.

-After eating sour candies, rinse your mouth out with water, drink milk, or eat a couple slices of cheese. This will help neutralize the acid in your mouth (wait at least one hour before brushing your teeth with toothpaste, as this can actually increase the effects of acid on your teeth)

-If tooth erosion has already begun, ask your dentist about ways you can help reduce sensitivity and continue to protect your teeth.

Good Breath Gone Bad -- Dr. Orchin Explains

At Orchin Orthodontics, we know that bad breath can be a real downer, especially when you are out on a date with that girl or boy you’ve had a crush on all semester! However, bad breath can be prevented!

Bad breath, or as your doctor may call it “halitosis,” is caused by odor-producing bacteria that grows in your mouth. This bacteria gathers on bits of food in your mouth and between your teeth and release sulfur compounds making your breath smell. Some foods, like garlic and onions, may contribute more to bad breath because of oils the food the food releases, and smoking is also a major cause of bad breath.

There are several myths around bad breath. Here are some common myths and the truth behind it all explained from Orchin Orthodontics:

Myth #1: Mouthwash will make my breath smell better

Mouthwash will make your breath smell better, but it is only a temporary fix. If you use mouthwash, just know that you will still need to brush and floss when you get the chance as mouthwash alone will not kill all of the bacteria producing germs in your mouth. When choosing a mouthwash, pick an antiseptic with plaque-reducing compounds. Also make sure any dental products you choose comes with the American Dental Association’s (ADA) seal of approval!

Myth #2: I brush my teeth; I will never have bad breath

Brushing your teeth will save you from having breath, but the truth is most people only brush their teeth for about 30-45 seconds! You need to brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes, twice a day to give your teeth a thorough cleansing. It’s also important to brush your tongue, which is where a majority of odor causing bacteria like to hang out. Lastly, flossing to remove food and plaque between the teeth will also help reduce your chances of having bad breath!

Myth #3: If I don’t smell it, then my breath is fresh

This is a false assumption in every sense of the word! The truth is that the breath you breathe out is not the same breath coming out when you talk to someone. When you breathe you are not using your throat as you do when you are talking; and when you talk more breath moves over the back of your mouth where bacteria is causing bad breath.

At Orchin Orthodontics, we know that when you sit down to dinner or grab a sandwich for lunch, you wouldn’t have a side of nine teaspoons of sugar. But that’s exactly what you’re taking in when you pair a meal with a 12-ounce can of soda pop.

Soft drinks are a poor choice for your overall health, since they have no nutritional value, and they contain sugar and caffeine. And when it comes to your teeth, soft drinks can cause big trouble. The steep servings of sugar create the perfect condition for cavities to form, while the phosphoric and citric acids in soda pop can erode and weaken your enamel – the outer coating on your teeth – making it tougher for your teeth to withstand the onslaught of sugar.

Both the Canadian and American Dental Associations recommend limiting your intake of soft drinks. 1. Brush your choppers twice each day. Better yet, brush after every meal. If you eat lunch at work or school, keep an extra toothbrush there. Also, be sure to replace your toothbrush regularly. Every few months, swap your brush for a fresh one.

Flossing also helps keep your gums healthy, preventing periodontal disease, which can also lead to bad breath. If using regular floss is difficult for you, try one of the many interdental cleaners available at drugstores.

3. Pick up a water pick. Along with floss, a water pick reaches spots your toothbrush can’t, like under your tongue and into the back of your mouth.

4. Treat your tongue right. Bacteria can gather on the surface of your tongue, so use a soft-bristled toothbrush or a tongue scraper to clean it every time you brush.

5. Tap your inner teenager and chew gum. The act of chewing (sugarless!) gum stimulates the production of saliva, which naturally washes away bacteria and food particles. If you suffer from a lack of saliva due to “dry mouth,” a condition sometimes caused by medication, let your dentist know; he or she can help address the problem.

6. Don’t fall for the myth of mouthwash. Most mouthwashes merely mask the smell of bad breath and don’t do anything to solve the underlying problem.

7. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Drink water regularly to keep your mouth moist, and go easy on alcohol and caffeine, both of which are dehydrating.

8. Turn off the tobacco. Smoking and chewing tobacco lead to bad breath. They also increase your risk of a host of serious health problems, from periodontal disease to cancer.

9. Take note of what you take in. Certain diets, foods and medications can affect your breath. If your problem doesn’t appear to be oral, make a list of the foods you eat and medications you take. Review it with your dentist or your family doctor to assess the source of the problem.

10. Call in the experts. It’s important to have your teeth professionally checked and cleaned twice a year. Your dentist can give your teeth a thorough cleaning that isn’t possible at home, as well as check for and treat early signs of problems such as cavities or periodontal disease.

In rare cases, persistent bad breath can be a sign of a larger health problem. The American Dental Association lists possible medical sources of bad breath, including respiratory infection, chronic sinusitis, postnasal drip, chronic bronchitis, diabetes, gastrointestinal disturbance, and liver or kidney ailments. If your dentist suspects that your breath problem stems from a medical issue, he or she will recommend speaking with your family doctor immediately.

Dr. Andrew Orchin is very active in staying current with the ever-changing dental industry. He is on the Board of the District of Columbia Dental Society. He is the Chairman of the Membership Committee of the DC Dental Society. He also belongs to numerous local multi-disciplinary study clubs, including the DC Millennium Study Club and the Renaissance Study Club. He is also an active member in the prestigious national study club The Sculman Study Group.

Dr. Orchin is currently the chairman of the Local Arrangements Committee for the 2010 American Association of Orthodontists Annual Session, which will be held in Washington, DC and is expected to draw 25,000 visitors.

If two people with braces kiss, can their braces become locked together?

With today’s smaller sleeker braces it is extremely difficult – almost impossible – to lock braces while kissing. Also, braces are not magnetic, which means any “attraction” felt is on the part of the wearers, so pucker up!

You are cleared for takeoff – the lightweight materials used in braces will not affect metal detectors.

Can braces rust?

No. Today’s braces are made of new stronger materials, like titanium alloy, and will not rust.

Can I play a musical instrument?

Now that I have braces, can I still play sports?

Yes, but be sure to wear a mouth guard. Mouth guards are one of the least expensive pieces of protective equipment available. Not only can mouth guards save teeth, they may also protect against jaw fractures. Mouth guards are advisable for anyone, whether they wear braces or not.

Will my braces attract unwarranted attention from fish?

Scuba aficionados take heart: there is no need to cancel your next dive. The small brackets used in today’s braces, especially ceramic or tooth-colored brackets, will not attract attention from unsavory fish or sea life.

Once braces are removed, my teeth will remain straight forever, right?

Wrong. Teeth move throughout one’s lifetime, therefore it is important to hold on to retainers and wear them as prescribed by your orthodontist to maintain a healthy, beautiful smile.

Marvelous Molasses Cookies

They smell wonderful even before baking, they melt in your mouth, and they never harden up. Yum – the best of gingerbread and ginger snaps in one!

* 1 cup shortening
* 1 cup brown sugar
* 1 egg
* 1/2 tsp salt
* 1/2 cup molasses
* 1/2 cup warm water
* 1 tsp baking soda
* 1 tsp cinnamon
* 1/2 tsp ginger
* 2 1/2 cups flour

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Baking time 11 minutes.

In a large bowl, combine shortening, brown sugar, egg, salt and molasses, using an electric mixer and beating until fluffy. Add cinnamon and ginger. In a small bowl or measuring cup, stir the baking soda into the warm water; add water mixture to the molasses mixture alternately with the flour until well blended.

Drop by tablespoons onto greased cookie sheets. Bake for 11 minutes at 350 degrees. Makes about four dozen. Store in a covered container.

Gummy Tummy - Orchin Orthodontics

We know the rumors going around – mostly among young people – that once you swallow a piece of chewing gum it will stake a claim and take up residency in your stomach for at least seven years! We really hate to take all the fun out of the mystery, but the truth is that chewing gum, when swallowed, will enter the stomach and move through the digestive system just like any other piece of food and leave the body long before seven years! So, if you ever have accidentally swallowed a piece of gum, there is no need to worry!

This being said, gum does not have any dietary benefits, so while it’s not harmful to swallow, you still want to avoid swallowing it. If you are a gum-chewer, make sure you chew sugarless gum, because gum with sugar can lead to cavities. Sugarless gum still has the same amount of flavor, but with less cavity causing ingredients. You see, when the bacterium in your mouth breaks down sugar, what’s left behind is acid. This acid eats away at the enamel coating of your teeth, causing holes that we call cavities. Cavities can lead to other long term mouth problems if they are not treated in time, so it is best to try and avoid overexposing your teeth to too many harmful substances!

One word nobody wants to hear when they visit the dentist is Cavity! That’s right, the dreaded cavity; but, what exactly is a cavity and how do they happen? A cavity is a hole that develops in a tooth when the tooth begins to decay. It’s important to get a cavity filled as soon as it’s detected so that it does not grow bigger.

So, what causes a cavity? A cavity is caused by plaque, a sticky substance that forms on the tooth as a result of germ and bacteria build-up. Plaque is acidic and as it clings to your teeth the acids eat away the outside of the tooth (also called the enamel) and a hole is formed.

Yes, cavities can be repaired by your dentist, but here are a few simple steps you can take to prevent cavities:

• Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice daily
• Gently brush your gums to keep them healthy (when choosing a toothbrush it is recommended to use soft bristles)
• Floss your teeth at least once a day to remove plaque and food that may be caught between the teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach
• Limit the amount of soda and sugary treats you eat/drink
• Be sure to visit your dentist every six months for a teeth cleaning and check-up

Did you know that more complex cases are now perfect for Invisalign? In fact, if you were previously told that Invisalign was not an effective treatment option for you, now is the perfect time to return for another consultation to learn how it may now an ideal treatment for you.

Orchin Orthodontics was one of the first practices in the country to begin using the Invisalign Teen product. The results are amazing and all our patients are happy with the aligners. Invisalign Teen is a wonderful product that has the ability to be widely used. The only caveat to this is that the teenager must be both responsible and compliant if the aligners are to work. You know your teenager the best and we urge you to take it under advisement before beginning Invisalign Teen. Nothing is more disappointing for our doctors, parents and patients than not being able to complete a case.

Dr. Andrew Orchin also attended a course that focused on TAD’s (Temporary Anchorage Devices) and the use of a laser in orthodontics. TAD’s are used in more comprehensive orthodontic cases. Dr. Andrew is now able to move teeth in ways he never could before. A TAD is a micro implant (about the size of the head of a pin) that is painlessly (only a topical numbing gel is needed) placed and removed by Dr. Andrew right in the office. Dr. Andrew will be using a laser to assist in the eruption of teeth. Many times orthodontic treatment comes to a halt when waiting for a tooth to erupt. Often this tooth is just under the surface of the gum. Dr. Andrew can now use a laser to gently make a small window in the gum tissue for the tooth to easily pass through. This is great news because it means the patient will complete orthodontic treatment in a shorter period of time which is always welcome news!

People have been brushing their teeth for thousands of years! In fact, the first “toothbrush” was created around 3000BC! Ancient civilizations used a thin twig with a frayed edge to rub against their teeth for cleaning.

The first toothbrush with bristles – similar to today’s toothbrushes – was invented in 1498 in China. Brushes were made out of bone or bamboo with bristles made from the hairs on the back of a hog’s neck.

It wasn’t until 1938 that the first nylon bristle toothbrush was introduced and people quickly became aware of practicing good oral hygiene.

Here are some other interesting facts about your toothbrush (and toothpaste):

• Most people are said to use blue toothbrushes over any other color
• The first toothpaste was used in 500 BC in China and India
• On average, children smile about 400 times per day
• Your toothbrush should be replaced every two months
• The first known toothpaste was used in 1780, Crest was introduced in the US in 1955 and Colgate in 1873
